SkADaMo - Day 30!

Here it is, just under the wire, the last sketch for my Sketch A Day Month! This has been so much fun, I do believe I'll do it again next year. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to visit!

SkaDaMo - Day 29

We cut down our Christmas tree today. It was beautiful out on the tree farm, with little Georgia O'Keefe clouds in the sky.

SkADaMo - Day 28

I'm thankful for the little things, and the mightiness held within.

SkADaMo - Day 24

This was just an excuse to use some beautiful fabric we got at a fundraiser for the Women's Global Education Project recently. They do awesome work educating women in Kenya and Senegal.

SkADaMo - Day 22

The Illustration Friday theme is Shadow, which triggered a memory. When my son was little and got tired of walking, I'd challenge him to try to step on my shadow. It would quickly turn into a weird chase, with me distorting my body to make my shadow harder to reach. (By the way, he's much harder to trick into complying these days.)  Don't forget to check out my fellow sketchers here!

SkADaMo - Day 21

Quick one tonight - just felt the need to exorcise a demon.

SkADaMo - Day 20

Well, I spent far longer on this than I had planned, but in my defense, I had fun!

SkADaMo - Day 19

Time for another sharp turn! This quick sketch of an orangutan is done with markers, colored pencil, and oil pastel. I hesitated sharing this, since it's so messy and loose, but what the heck. (By the way, I'm a little obsessed with orangutans.)

SkADaMo - Day 18

Birding about. Just for fun.

SkADaMo - Day 17

We've had some weather today.

SkADaMo - Day 16

Only time for a quick one today: self-portrait with tail. Black Flair pen on notebook paper, fooled with in Photoshop. I used to love reading "The Littles" books when I was, well, little. As I recall, they were very vain about their tails.

SkADaMo - Day 15

More loosey goosey work, this time a fat, happy terrier. India ink and watercolor on a notecard.

SkADaMo - Day 14

And now for something completely different. The experimenting continues. It's fun! Don't forget to check out my fellow sketchers here.

SkADaMo - Day 13

More experiments in working loose. I actually sketched 7 turkeys and I like this one the best. It also happens to be the loosest. Have you ever seen a real turkey up close? They're REALLY ugly. We saw one at a farm once and burst out laughing at how ugly it was, whereupon Ol' Tom gobbled angrily and charged the fence, as if to say "You wanna piece of me?" Yes, Tom. Yes, we do.

SkADaMo - Day 12

Feeling a little less ambitious this morning, I went the safe route and sketched a familiar subject, Buster, who sleeps a LOT. I could fill an album with sketches of Buster sleeping.

SkADaMo - Day 11

If it seems like I'm all over the map style-wise with these sketches, it's only because I am. I've decided to use this exercise to do a little experimenting, comparing tight and loose styles, to see what feels right for a possible new direction.

SkADaMo - Day 10

Parachute playtime at preschool.

SkADaMo - Day 9

Did you ever try to talk to a child only to have them look at you with pure suspicion? It always makes me feel so guilty!

SkADaMo - Day 8

By request, an armadillo. Playing knight . . . in armor. Get it?

SkADaMo - Day 7

Tis the season! Our lawn is covered in golden leaves. It's a beautiful sight. An even more beautiful sight was the little girl down the block carrying a giant Sycamore leaf, as big as her head. It was one of those delightful little moments that brings an internal smile to remember.

SkADaMo - Day 6

It's been cold and rainy all day here. A perfect day for a bowl of soup and a nap. I'm having fun with this sketch-a-day challenge! You can check out my fellow sketchers here.

SkADaMo - Day 5

This is a twofer, also covering the Illustration Friday topic, "Secret." When I pondered on that subject a bit, I thought of a hilarious story I heard recently on The Moth Radio Hour (which, if you've never heard of it, is great to listen to). It's a story about boys coveting rare Lego pieces, and hiding them in their cubbies. Having spent many years in the land of Legos when my boys were young, I knew exactly the pieces described. You can listen to the story here.

SkADAMo - Day 4

This was a quickie - it's late and I'm tired. Last night I pulled into the driveway and surprised a chipmunk with my headlights. It couldn't decide which way to run, and for a second I swear it froze and looked right at me. Just as I finished this sketch, my dog jumped up next to me and, curious to see what I was doing, sniffed my sketch with his wet snout, smearing it all over. I did what I could in Photoshop. Like I said, it's late, and I'm tired.

SkADAMo - Day 3

Relax, Rabbit. We turned the clocks back. You've got time.

SkADAMo - Day 2

Halloween's over. Have at it, friend.

SkADaMo 2013 - Day 1

Who doesn't love a creative challenge? And for some masochistic reason, November is loaded with them, just in time for the holidays. There's NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), and PiBoWriMo (a picture book idea a day), and now, thanks to Linda Silvestri, we have SkADaMo. The challenge is to create a sketch a day for a month. So I'm in! Anyone care to join me?

I spent today at the Great Lakes Bioneers Conference downtown (environmentalism is my other passion), which inspired this first sketch. Kids and nature, that's what makes the world go round, right?
